St. Paul’s Prayers for Wisdom and Understanding  

(Amplified Version)

 Paul’s Prayers  (4 Prayer: Ep 1: 17.23; Ep 3:14-21;  Ph 1:1,9-11;  Col 1:1,9-11   )

   
 First Prayer 

       [For I always pray to] the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, that He may grant you a spirit of wisdom and revelation [of insight into mysteries and secrets] in the deep and intimate knowledge of Him

     By having the eyes of your heart flooded with light, so that you can know and understand the hope to which He has called you, and how rich is His glorious inheritance in the saints (His set-apart ones).

    And [so that you can know and understand] what is the immeasurable and unlimited and surpassing greatness of His power in and for us who believe, as demonstrated in the working of His mighty strength.

       Which He exerted in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His [own] right hand in the heavenly [places].

       Far above all rule and authority and power and dominion and every name that is named [above every title that can be conferred], not only in this age and in this world, but also in the age and the world which are to come.

     And He has put all things under His feet and has appointed Him the universal and supreme Head of the Church, [a headship exercised throughout the church].

      Which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all [for in the body lives the full measure of Him who makes everything complete, and who will everything everywhere with Himself]. Amen

   Second Prayer
  
            For this reason [seeing the greatness of this plan by which you are built together in Christ], I bow my knees before the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

       For whom every family in heaven and on earth is named [that Father from whom all fatherhood takes its title and derives its name].

      May He grant you out of the rich treasury of His glory to be strengthened and reinforced with mighty power in the inner man by the [Holy] Spirit [Himself indwelling your innermost being and personality]. May Christ through your faith [actually] dwell [settle down, abide, make His permanent home] in your hearts! May you be rooted deep in love and founded securely on love,

     That you may have the power and be strong to apprehend and grasp with all the saints [God's devoted people, the experience of that love] what is the breadth and length and height and depth [of it];

      [That you may really come] to know [practically, through experience for yourselves] the love of Christ, which far surpasses mere knowledge [without experience]; that you may be filled [through all your being] unto all the fullness of God [may have the richest measure of the divine Presence, and become a body wholly filled and flooded with God Himself]!

       Now to Him who, by (in consequence of) the [action of His] power that is at work within us, is able to [carry out His purpose and] do super abundantly far over and above all that we [dare] ask or think [infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, hopes or dreams]-

      To Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations forever and ever. Amen so be it

   Third Prayer
  
        PAUL AND Timothy, bond servants of Christ Jesus (the Messiah) to all the saints (God’s consecrated people) in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi, with the bishops (overseers) and deacons (assistants).

     And this I pray: that your love may abound yet more and more and extend to its fullest development in knowledge and all keen insight [that your love may display itself in greater depth of acquaintance and more comprehensive discernment],

      So that you may surely learn to sense what is vital, and approve and prize what is excellent and of real value [recognizing the highest and the best, and distinguishing the moral differences], and that you may be untainted and pure and unerring and blameless [so that with hearts sincere and certain and unsullied, you may approach] the day of Christ [not stumbling nor causing others to stumble].

      May you abound in and be filled with the fruits of righteousness (of right standing with God and right doing) which come through Jesus Christ (the Anointed One), to the honour and praise of God that His glory may be both manifested and recognized. Amen

   Fourth Prayer
  
        PAUL, AN apostle (special messenger) of Christ Jesus (the Messiah), by the will of God, and Timothy [our] brother.

     For this reason we also, from the day we heard of it, have not ceased to pray and make [special] request for you, [asking] that you may be filled with the full (deep and clear) knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom [in comprehensive insight into the ways and purposes of God] and in understanding and discernment of spiritual things-

     That you may walk (live and conduct yourselves) in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to Him and desiring to please Him in all things, bearing fruit in every good work and steadily growing and increasing in and by the knowledge of God [with fuller, deeper, and clearer insight, acquaintance, and recognition].

      [We pray] that you may be invigorated and strengthened with all power according to the might of His glory, [to exercise] every kind of endurance and patience (perseverance and forbearance) with joy.

Dovunque tu sia attraverso i continenti, tu che vorresti percepire il mistero che sta al cuore del tuo cuore, intuisci la bellezza profonda dell’animo umano?

Qual è questa bellezza nascosta? È l’audacia d’una attesa. Se anche lo ignoriamo, uno dei desideri più intimi del nostro essere è quello di amare. Senza amore, la nostra vita troverebbe un senso?

Che Dio mi ama è una realtà talvolta poco accessibile 1, ma viene il giorno di una scoperta: se mi lascio raggiungere dal suo amore, la mia vita si apre agli altri 2.
 

Accogliendo quanti vengono a lui, il Cristo dice loro: “Beati i cuori semplici!” 3

Un cuore semplice è attento a vivere il momento presente 4, disponendosi ad avanzare da un inizio a un nuovo inizio 5.

La fede è come uno slancio di umilissima fiducia, mille volte ripreso nel corso della nostra esistenza.

Un cuore semplice acconsente a non comprendere tutto del Vangelo. Può dire a Dio: “Non mi appoggio solamente sulla mia fede. Ciò che io non capisco, altri lo comprendono e rischiarano il mio cammino” 6.

Una tale semplicità suscita la compassione, rende attenti a coloro che, attraverso la terra, conoscono gli abbandoni, le umiliazioni 7. 

Certi giorni abbiamo l’impressione di pregare con quasi nulla, ci può essere come un impoverimento, ma Dio ci rende capaci di viverlo.

Anche quando si crea una distanza tra Dio e noi, possiamo affidargli tutto, deporre tutto in lui 8.

Beato allora chi può dire a Cristo:
“Tu il Cristo, tu lo sai, faccio fatica ad esprimere il mio desiderio di comunione con te 9, ma il tuo Spirito Santo rianima in me un’audacia, quella di abbandonarmi in te.

Tu vedi chi sono. Hai conosciuto la condizione umana 10. Non ti nascondo nulla del mio cuore. Non ignori che talvolta sono tirato da più parti nello stesso momento. Ma quando interiormente avverto un vuoto, dimora in me la sete della tua presenza. E quando non riesco a pregare, tu sei la mia preghiera” 11. 

La preghiera è un tesoro del Vangelo 12, apre una strada che porta ad amare e a perdonare.
Il perdono può cambiare e il nostro cuore e la nostra vita: si allontanano allora le severità, le durezze di giudizio, per lasciar posto alla bontà e alla benevolenza del cuore. Ed eccoci capaci di cercare di comprendere, più che di essere compresi 13.

Chi vive del perdono riesce ad attraversare le situazioni indurite, proprio come l’acqua del ruscello che, all’inizio della primavera, si scava un passaggio attraverso la terra ancora gelata.

Per quanto ci sentiamo sprovvisti, una delle urgenze di oggi è mettere comprensione laddove ci sono contrasti. Bastano certi ricordi del passato per mantenere le distanze fra le persone come anche fra le nazioni.

Niente è più tenace della memoria di ferite e umiliazioni 14. Cercare instancabilmente di perdonare e di riconciliarsi apre ad un futuro inatteso 15.
E ciò che è vero per ogni persona, lo è anche in quel mistero di comunione che è il Corpo di Cristo, la sua Chiesa 16. 

Non ci sono, ovunque, delle persone umili che preparano le strade del futuro? Ciò che li attrae, è che una speranza si diffonda. Non sono necessariamente i doni prestigiosi o le grandi facilità che determinano i più profondi cambiamenti, ma, più di quanto lo si supponga, l’ardente carità.

Lo Spirito Santo effuso in ogni essere umano 17, offre libertà e spontaneità. Ridona il gusto della vita a chi lo perde. Viene a liberare dallo scoraggiamento. Né i dubbi, né l’impressione di un silenzio di Dio ci privano del suo Spirito Santo.

Chi si apre al suo soffio e lo accoglie in un umile ascolto entra in un’avventura interiore.

Nei grandi affanni di un’esistenza, lo Spirito Santo è un sostegno, una consolazione 18. In lui le sorgenti di giubilo 19, di una gioia leggera, sono sempre offerte. E questa gioia ci rende più vicini a coloro che attraversano la sofferenza 20.

Sei secoli prima della venuta di Cristo, Dio interpellava con queste parole: “Non ricordate più le cose passate, non pensate più alle cose antiche! Ecco, faccio una cosa nuova: proprio ora germoglia, non ve ne accorgete?” 21

Si, stupore d’una gioia: lo Spirito Santo vuol fare di noi delle persone completamente trasparenti, come un cielo di primavera.

Il Vangelo porta in sé una così chiara speranza e un tale invito alla gioia che vorremmo giungere fino al dono di noi stessi per trasmetterle vicino e lontano.
Dov’è la sorgente della speranza e della gioia? È in Dio che instancabilmente ci cerca e trova in noi la bellezza profonda dell’animo umano.

PREGHIERE

Spirito Santo, non permettere che i nostri cuori siano turbati, rassicuraci nelle nostre oscurità, donaci la gioia, e attenderemo nel silenzio e nella pace che si levi su di noi una luce del Vangelo.

Gesù Cristo, nelle nostre profondità tu discerni un’attesa contemplativa: una sete riempie la nostra anima, quella di abbandonarci in te.

Gesù nostra speranza, con il poco che capiamo del Vangelo, ci fai scoprire ciò che ti aspetti da noi.

Gesù Cristo, nella preghiera le nostre povere parole spesso fanno fatica ad esprimere il nostro desiderio di una comunione con te, ma tu già ci accogli

In Honor of Saint Paul

O God of knowledge and giver of wisdom, who bringest to light the hidden things of darkness, and givest the word unto them that preach the gospel with great power, who of Thy goodness didst call Paul, who was sometime a persecutor, to be a chosen vessel, and wast pleased in him, that he should become a chosen apostle and preacher of the gospel of Thy kingdom, O Christ our God. Thee also do we now entreat, O Thou good and that lovest man. A Prayer to Saint Paul, Apostle to the Gentiles

this prayer to Saint Paul, we pray for the grace to persevere in the Christian Faith. Saint Paul himself suffered greatly for his witness to Christ, even, in the end, giving his life in martyrdom on June 29, 67, when he was beheaded outside of the gates of Rome.

To Saint Paul for Perseverance

O glorious Saint Paul, who, from being a persecutor of the Christian name, didst become its most zealous Apostle, and who, to carry the knowledge of Jesus, our divine Saviour, to the uttermost parts of the earth, didst joyfully suffer prison, scourgings, stonings, shipwreck, and all manner of persecutions, and who didst finish thy course by shedding the last drop of thy blood: obtain for us the grace to accept, as favors bestowed by the mercy of God, the infirmities, sufferings, and misfortunes of this life, that we may not grow slack in our service of God by reason of these vicissitudes of our exile, but that we may the rather show ourselves ever more devoted. Amen.

Maître, ô Christ, Maître qui sauves les âmes,
Dieu, Maître de toutes les Puissances visibles et invisibles,
parce que Créateur de tout ce qui est dans le ciel,
et de ce qui existe au-dessus du ciel,
de ce qui est sous la terre,

Prière du travailleur

Jésus, divin ouvrier et ami des ouvriers, jette un regard bienveillant sur le monde du travail. Nous te présentons les besoins de tous ceux et celles qui se livrent à un travail physique ou intellectuel. Tu connais le poids de notre vie remplie de fatigues, de souffrances physiques et morales et de dangers. Redis-nous tes paroles: « J’ai pitié de ce peuple. » Réconforte-nous par les mérites et l’intercession de saint Joseph, modèle des travailleurs et des artisans.
  
Donne-nous la sagesse, la vertu et l’amour qui animaient tes journées de labeur. Inspire-nous des sentiments de foi, de paix, de modération et d’économie de sorte que nous ne cherchions pas seulement le pain quotidien mais les biens spirituels et le paradis. Délivre-nous de ceux qui visent à nous ravir le don de la foi et la confiance en la Providence. Sauve-nous de ceux qui violent les droits de la personne humaine et portent atteinte à sa dignité. Inspire des lois sociales conformes au magistère de l’Église. Que les classes sociales s’entraident sincèrement à faire régner la charité et la justice. Que le Pape, vicaire du Christ, soit considéré comme maître de doctrine sociale pour assurer au travailleur la promotion personnelle, la possession du royaume des cieux promis en héritage aux pauvres en esprit. Amen.
